Description
Writing from the Heart offers us a unique window into what young people have learned about life. This collection of essays captures the values that matter most to teens—values such as love, perseverance, family, and helping others—in their own words. As the young writers reflect on their own experience, readers of all ages will be inspired by their wisdom and hope.
From Chattanooga to China, these essays are all extraordinary. They not only celebrate the accomplishments of the young writers, but also offer an opportunity to peer into the hearts and minds of young people around the world. Readers may be amazed at some of the hardships that these teens have faced, but will have a deep sense of optimism for our future. In addition, they inspire us to make the most of our lives as well.

The writing here is vivid and direct, the lessons clear - the reader cannot fail to be moved by these vignettes and the events that touched the young writers and gave them an insight into one of life’s laws or principles. As one of them observes, wisdom does not automatically come with age; we need to learn deeply from experience as we go along.

Most of the selections relate a story of how an encounter with someone less fortunate, someone with remarkably inspiring character traits, or someone who loved them unconditionally helped the young writers to determine their goals and personalities. The entrants range from age 9 to 20; consequently, the literary quality varies widely.

This volume would find an audience among students looking for personal essay themes, yet I cannot imagine it receiving a wide leisure following. Parents of these young authors should be proud of their students’ accomplishments and find fulfillment in seeing this compilation. Middle school libraries might shelve it alongside monologues and/or essays.
